Bob Garrett, Vocal Coach and Teacher

I am thrilled to announce my new workshop for Toronto – Sept 14-16.  My special guest is Rachel Hoffman of  famed Bernie Telsey and Co. Casting.

This workshop not only focuses on Musical Theatre — “From Audition thru Opening Night” but also addresses the world of TV and Film as regards the slew of musicals scheduled for filming in the next few months. Rachel, of course,  was the casting director for  TV’s “SMASH”  (in addition to most of the show currently on Broadway) and some of the upcoming projects she and/or I are involved with are “Jersey Boys”, “Beach Boys”, “Annie” , “Into the Woods” and others. As a result I will also be focusing on Pop Music for those projects.

Come join us for an amazing three days. Toronto is one of my favorite cities based on my past workshops and the three movies I coached for there.. “Me and My Shadows: Life with Judy Garland”, “Grey Gardens” and “The Vow.”  Pre registration begins now.  And here’s the link.  Hope to see you!

SPOTS ARE GOING FAST AND I’M PREPARING CHOICE OF 15 SONG SELECTIONS TO CHOOSE 2 FROM FOR ALL THOSE ATTENDING.

LOOKING VERY FORWARD TO SEEING YOU ALL IN MY FAVORITE CITY.

I’m thrilled to tell you that I’m coming back to Toronto on July 20th, 21st and 22nd for a brand new Workshop with top Telsey & Co casting director, Rachel Hoffman.
Rachel is currently represented on Broadway having cast Wicked, Annie, Motown, Spider Man and Rock of Ages as well as the two seasons of SMASH. She has also cast dozens of other musicals, films, TV series and Musicals on tour and regionally. She is an invaluable asset to actors, both from an exposure point of view and in offering tremendous support, knowledge and experience regarding your auditions and callbacks.
  • This new workshop, the “MUSICAL THEATRE, TV & FILM GYM”,  focuses not only on intensive work on two new songs for each participant’s book but also on your essence and castability, how to “drive the train” of your career  and campaign for the roles you are currently right for. I will of course cover audition, callback and creating the role techniques and will also focus on Pop music for the theatre, film and television series work.  Now that all mediums have scores written by Pop composers, I believe that now needs to be a vital part of your musical world as well. Of course, I will email you 15 or more song selections, and have you choose two to work on over the weekend.  On Day One you will have the opportunity to perform one of your current pieces for Rachel,  who will give feedback, career advice  and accept pictures and resumes for future projects cast by Telsey and Co.

About The Workshop:
After a hugely successful masterclass in Toronto and Vancouver – NYC and LA celebrity vocal coach Bob Garrett, (Katy Perry, Channing Tatum,  Jessica Lange, Drew Barrymore,  Brian Stokes Mitchell, Gerard Butler,  Vanessa Hudgens, Big Time Rush,  Judy Davis, etc.) returns to Toronto to offer another unique 3 Day Musical Theatre Masterclass, with special guest premiere Broadway Casting Director Rachel Hoffman of TELSEY + COMPANY.
Please visit Bob’s website, Bobgarrett.net for more info  about his career with legendary actors/singers. in theatre, film and television including his coaching on the film  “Grey Gardens”, “Phantom of the Opera” and  “Me and My  Shadows: Life with Judy Garland” and “The Vow”, etc..
Participation in the Masterclass is offered for all three days, or alternatively Day 1 & 2, or Day 3 only.

Participation is by application, and preference will be given to
experienced performers, or performers with considerable formal training.

Performers must submit a headshot and resume for consideration, and preference will be given to Equity performers (all non union performers must have considerable professional experience and/or training and will be admitted on a case by case basis).

Performers will be asked to prepare material  in advance of the workshop:  Simply choose  two songs from a list of over 15 songs, personally selected for you by Bob Garrett based on voice and casting type.  In addition, talent should bring their own prepared material to work on and coach for Rachel and Bob to review in our mock audition session on Day 1 (see below).

The workshop, “From Audition through Opening Night” journeys through the vitals tools and secrets on how to triumph at auditions, callbacks and in creating the role. Bob chooses unique material that will rarely be performed by others at auditions, etc. Your new repertoire, will guarantee that you will no longer be looking for material and working on material days before an audition.  And your new book will be designed not just to show off your voice but to move people in the room and ensure that you give memorable auditions. Pop music will also be a part of your new repertoire to acknowledge the ever growing list of Pop composers on Broadway and in Tv and film. Microphone technique and studio recording will be covered as well.

For performers participating in Day 3 of the workshop, we’ll run through your new material in a mock audition setting. Feedback, notes and redirection will be given throughout as well as a question and answer session about auditioning, callbacks, casting in the US, Broadway, National tours and film/tv musical projects,  the actor/ agent relationship and the importance of agency representation in the industry.

Happy New Year to all!   I am thrilled to announce that my work with  Jessica Lange on American Horror Story’s production number of “The Name Game” has gone viral! The number was ingeniously conceived by Ryan  Murphy and brilliantly shot by Michael Leeman. Jessica’s work was of course, perfection and our process together over a period of weeks was an exciting and fun pleasure.  Check it out on Youtube.

Next up is Create the Role workshop showcase on January 17th at J.E.T. Studios  in North Hollywood and my continuing work on the book and lyrics for  the new original musical “SING!”  soon to be scheduled for a workshop.

I’ll also announce dates for  Musical Theatre Workshops in Los Angeles, Vancouver and Toronto by the end of the month.

Happy and Healthy to all!

‘SING!’ and SWITZERLAND!

After a truly memorable time teaching my Master Class in the beautiful Vancouver, it’s back to work on Act 2 of our new musical “SING!”  The presentation was beyond any expectations I may have had with the best of casts: Brett Rybeck Latoya London, Jennifer Leigh Warren. Lindsey Ray, Steven Goode, Sabrina Sloan, Kyle Cooper Elizabeth Brackenbury and Kristoffer McKneeley.  Brilliant work by our Musical Director Todd Schroeder and the amazing magic RJ Durrell works with his choreography. Maria CIna, Stephen Bray and Jonathan Kruger were perfect as the “judges” .  Nothing would have been possible without the best of producers, Steve Binder  whose concept started it all and the perfect partner, the always inspiring  and brilliantly talented  Franne Golde.  Onward!

Of course working on song #2 with  Jessica Lange on American Horror Story – Asylum was the most memorable episodic fun I’ve ver had. It will be aired on Episode 10- Dont miss it!  Jessica is brilliant as always and rocked the house in her inimitable sexy way.

And I’m very much looking forward to a new workshop with World Dance Movement in March in Zurich Switzerland.

More news to come soon… and Wishing you all a Happy Holiday!!
