BOB GARRETT began studying voice at age thirteen with world famous teachers Rose Allen, and Sue Seaton, whose students included Pavarotti, Audrey Hepburn, Donna Summer, Dick Van Dyke, Bernadette Peters, and many, many others. In 1990, they deemed Bob, the only person ever so designated, to teach their technique.
For the past twenty-five years, Bob has vocal coached countless clients in all phases of show business. His client list includes Katy Perry, Channing Tatum, Drew Barrymore, Jane Fonda, Elle Fanning, Gerard Butler, Jessica Lange, Vanessa Hudgens, Rebel Wilson, Evan Peters, Sarah Paulson, Big Time Rush, Kathy Bates, America Ferrera, Loretta Devine, Lesley Ann Warren, Hamish Linklater, Wilson-Philips, Brian Stokes Mitchell, and for “ME AND MY SHADOWS: LIFE WITH JUDY GARLAND,” Emmy winners, Judy Davis and Tammy Blanchard and countless others.
Bob’s vocal coaching on current feature films also includes “Teen Spirit” with Elle Fanning, “Valley Girl- the Musical” with Joshua Whitehouse and “The Book Club” with Jane Fonda and Diane Keaton. Work on past films includes, “Grey Gardens” “The Vow”, “Phantom of the Opera,” “Me and My Shadows: Life with Judy Garland”, “Lucky You,” “Music and Lyrics” et al.
Bob Garrett began his career as an actor, starring on Broadway in GREASE as Teen Angel, in seven of the ten roles in GODSPELL, as Motel the Tailor in FIDDLER ON THE ROOF, et al. As a singer-songwriter, Bob next recorded for A&M Records, became a song-staff writer for Motown, Columbia Pictures Music, and for the television series FAME. His songs have been recorded by HEART, Michael Jackson, Tina Turner, Smokey Robinson, Gladys Knight, Tina Turner, and many others. And he’s collaborated with the best of songwriters from Brenda Russell and Tom Snow to Allee Willis and Franne Golde.
Mr. Garrett also coached the composers on the score for Broadway’s smash “THE COLOR PURPLE”. He has recently completed the book and lyrics for a new film musical “CALLBACK”, a contemporary love story focusing on the on and offstage relationships of nine singer-songwriters auditioning for and performing on a fictional television singing competition. Other writing credits include “MODERN LOVE”, for which he collaborated with Hall and Oates, lyrics for the Mark Taper Forum production of “STARS IN YOUR EYES,” Access Theatre’s, “FLAVIA AND THE DREAMMAKER,” and countless songs for many films including “THE FIGHT CLUB,” and many television themes including NBC’S “GIMME A BREAK.”
Bob has also written and directed many sitcoms and teleplays including Rain Pryor’s “FRIED CHICKEN AND LATKES,” (for which he won the NAACP Director of the Year award), and “DARK HORSE” for the Blank Theatre Company. For the Lifetime network he has written “ORDEAL” and “MORE THAN YOU KNOW” and for NBC, “REUNION.”
Mr. Garrett has also vocal coached for countless reality series including “American Idol”, “The Voice”, Bravo’s “No Talent Required,” “Don’t Forget the Lyrics” and “GREASE: You’re The One That I Want.” Bob teaches private classes and his students currently grace the Billboard charts and the stages of every musical currently running on Broadway.
